Escada also owes its success on the haute couture scene to the experience of its founder, Margaretha Ley. As a model, she acquired an in-depth knowledge of the world of haute couture. This experience has enabled her to precisely define the values of her fashion house. Margaretha Ley has a particular eye for print and color, and a taste for precision. Dressmaking techniques held no secrets for the designer. After the death of its founder in 1992, the German brand handed over to the artistic direction of Brian Rennie. Despite this major upheaval, the Munich-based haute couture house managed to retain its identity.

In November 2009, Margaretha and Wolfgang Ley's haute couture house reached a turning point. The company underwent a change of ownership. London-based Indian billionaire Lakshmi Mittal acquired the company and offered it to Megha Mittal, his daughter-in-law. The latter thus became the owner and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the prestigious company.

In August 2017, Niall Sloan took over as Creative Director of Escada. The brand returned to its fundamentals. It returned to the original vision of its late founder, Margaretha Ley. However, this return to its roots is accompanied by an assertive touch of modernity.

The luxury brand entered the fragrance market in the early 90s. The first Escada fragrance for women was called Margaretha Ley. It was distinguished by its unique heart-shaped bottle, a symbol of femininity and sensuality. Three years after the release of its first fragrance, the German haute couture house launched Chiffon Sorbet . This Escada fragrance drew its inspiration from the Munich-based house's Spring-Summer 1993 collection. Chiffon Sorbet quickly became a benchmark on the fragrance market. Escada is also known for its men's fragrances, with great successes such as the oriental Escada pour Homme, released in 1994.
