An unbreakable link with perfumery

Like many of her colleagues, Madame Grès did not immediately fall into the world of perfumery. Indeed, she first crossed into haute couture before exploring the fabulous world of olfactory pleasures.

It all began in 1903, the year Germaine Emilie Krebs was born. Originally, her dream was to become a dancer or sculptor but, over time, she eventually turned to fashion. She then opened a fashion house called "Alix Barton," which combined in its name the designer's nickname (Germaine was called "Alix") and the surname of her friend, Julie Barton. A year later, the two women parted ways. After Germaine's marriage to Serge Czerefkow, she took the name "Grès". This charismatic and intriguing Parisian then became known to all of Paris as the mysterious "Madame Grès". The Grès fashion house drew inspiration primarily from the mythical draped dresses that evoke the statues of Ancient Greece. A true artist at heart, with a unique interpretation of Parisian elegance, she began creating new drapes using an innovative type of fabric resulting in garments that required little sewing. Madame Grès created a style aimed at enhancing feminine curves. She also had the opportunity to dress some film personalities where she developed her reputation. Some time later, Madame Grès decided to turn to perfumery and broaden her horizons.

The success of the Grès brand

Madame Grès injects her vision of modernity and couture prestige into perfume manufacturing. It is thus in 1947 that the brand markets its very first fragrance "A de Grès". In her frantic quest for novelty, Madame Grès travels to India to develop her weaving techniques. Fascinated by the oriental and exotic Indian scents, she finds inspiration there for a new perfume. This is how she launches "Cabochard", an essence intended for ladies, which embraces, from its release, a resounding success on an international scale, just like her couture house. In 1959, the success of Grès perfumes takes an exceptional flight and it still continues today.

The Japanese group Yagi Tsusho Limited acquires the Grès couture house in 1988, and it is still the happy owner today. A few years later, in 1993, Madame Grès dies of a mysterious cause. After a few years of silence, Grès perfumes make headlines again in 2008, when the firm is bought by Art & Fragrance.

The Grès collections, a perfumery legend

The Grès workshop was the precursor of modern minimalism and Parisian elegance. It is with the same aspirations that Madame Grès' successors still create their perfumes to this day. This sacred heritage is primarily composed of the "Cabotine" perfume by Grès for women, a reference derived from the Cabochard range that has delighted the senses for over 25 years. Above all a symbol of elegance and an emblematic figure of the brand, it forms the pillar of the entire collection, dedicated solely to women. It was also the first to conquer the hearts of young girls when it was launched in 1990. Inspired by Madame Grès' stay in India, it is an innovative perfume, both soft and wild, with multiple facets.

In this same collection, there is also a floral and fruity fragrance, the "Eau de Parfum Cabotine Rose" by Grès for women, as well. "Cabotine" originally means "actress"; this perfume therefore embodies the charming and spontaneous woman, with a thousand faces who plays with her gaze. This woman also sometimes shows herself to be mischievous, dynamic and casual. This olfactory softness reflects the spicy and romantic personality of its creator.

In addition to the Heritage collection, there is also the Lumière collection, more conceptual and which is also inspired by couture. One of its best-known perfumes is the Lumière Blanche eau de parfum by Grès for women again, composed mainly of peach and mandarin, a perfect meeting of hot and cold in a bottle, and which embodies both innocence and sensuality.
