Who is Ralph Lauren?

Born Ralph Lifschitz, but better known as Ralph Lauren, he was born on October 14, 1939 in the Bronx, New York, United States. He spent his childhood in this neighborhood with other children his age. Among them was Calvin Klein, who would later also become very well-known. Moreover, the two men are closely connected and have helped each other several times in the fashion world, even though they only knew each other by sight as children.

At 16, young Ralph's life took a curious turn. Indeed, it was at this age that he changed his last name, in agreement with his older brother. They chose to be called Lauren from then on because of the mockery that Lifschitz provoked from their classmates. This Jewish name no longer suited the two young men who felt increasingly uncomfortable bearing it.

From his childhood, Ralph developed an attraction for elegance by occasionally buying expensive suits with money he earned after school. After studying business for two years at City College of New York and serving in the army for another two years, he returned to civilian life and married Ricky Low-Beer.

Launching his business?

Always passionate about fashion, he worked in several fashion and styling boutiques as a salesperson before later venturing into tie-making, which he sold in Bloomingdale's stores. His ties caught the attention of Norman Hilton in 1967, from whom he borrowed $50,000 after refusing his job offer. He thus opened his own boutique and sold his Polo ties there. After a year, he expanded his boutique to include men's shirts.

Later, at his wife's insistence, he created a women's line on which the brand's logo was seen for the first time. From 1970 onwards, Ralph Lauren multiplied his offerings by diversifying his product range. His greatest success came during the 1990s when he launched his Polo Sport line. This line propelled him to the ranks of the biggest fashion brands.

Besides Polo, Ralph Lauren also owns other brands such as Purple Label, Ralph Lauren Collection, Polo Black Label, RRL (Double RL), RLX, Polo Golf, Polo Jeans Co., Rugby, Chaps, and Denim & Supply.

A prolific perfumer

Following the success he had with his clothing lines between 1967 and 1977, Ralph Lauren created his perfumes in 1978. He then filed his license as a perfumer with Warner Cosmetics. Later, the perfume brand would be taken over by the French group L'Oréal, having become the majority shareholder. This was in 1984, 6 years after the brand's creation.

Since 1978, several perfumes from the Ralph Lauren brand have been created. Starting with the year of the brand's creation (1978), we have Polo (masculine) and Lauren (feminine).

In 1991, as demand had become strong, Polo Crest (masculine) was created. In 1994, Ralph Lauren created Polo Sport (masculine), then Polo Sport Extrême (masculine) and Polo Sport Woman (feminine) in 1997.

Between 1998 and 2001, the brand focused on love accords with Romance (feminine) in 1998, Romance Men (masculine) in 1999, Ralph (feminine) and Romance For Men (masculine) in 2000, and finally Glamourous (feminine) in 2001. In 2003, Polo Blue (masculine) and Purple Label (masculine) were created, then in 2004 Ralph Cool (feminine).

The year 2005 is the most productive for the Polo horseman brand. That same year, 5 new ranges were produced: Polo Blue (feminine), Polo Black (masculine), Glamourous Daylight (feminine), Lauren Style (feminine) and Romance Men Silver (masculine).

In 2007, Polo Explorer (unisex) was created. And in 2010, the collection of 3 Big Pony fragrances (masculine) was born before its feminine counterpart in 2012. This makes a total of 22 different perfume ranges created by Ralph Lauren between 1978 and 2012.

The most famous Ralph Lauren perfume ranges

Among the many Ralph Lauren perfumes for women and men, certain creations stand out for their success.

The Big Pony collection was released in 2010. It includes a series of four fragrances in different colors. There were green, yellow, red, and orange. These four colors corresponded to several profiles: there was the sportsman, the seducer, the trendy one, and the adventurer. Thus, these Ralph Lauren perfumes for men each represented one of these types of men.

Two years later, that is in 2012, Ralph Lauren feminized its collection while keeping the 4 series. We then have the sporty, the sensual, the independent, and the stylish woman. Customers then choose their preference.

Polo and Lauren are the first two fragrances from the American designer. The two formed a pair, or rather a couple. Polo for men and Lauren for women. It should be noted that the Polo fragrance was more successful than Lauren due to its aim to recall the scents of a Polo field.
