Calvin Klein: The New Yorker in fragrance fashion

Born in 1942, Calvin Klein is the founder of his own ready-to-wear brand, inspired by the sportswear of the working-class neighborhoods of his native Bronx. The American quickly established himself on the fashion scene, offering a wide range of products in all categories. Calvin Klein wasn't founded until 1968, but before then, the company's founder had learned the codes of the luxury world from a number of people who would play an important role in his career. First of all, there was his friend Ralph Lauren, who also founded his own ready-to-wear brand. Then there was Baron Nicolas de Gunzburg, who protected him and trained him in the fashion business, since Klein worked with him for five years.

Calvin Klein founded his company in 1968 with his friend Barry Schwartz, and the gamble paid off. Klein and Schwartz quickly became popular, for while the American's luxury was within the industry average, Klein opted for simplicity. His Calvin Klein brand quickly became an icon in the United States. The company, which spans ready-to-wear, perfumes and luxury accessories, enjoys a very positive global image, enabling Calvin Klein to structure his business and sell it in 2002 to the American Phillips-Van Heusen Corporation.

Calvin Klein: controversial campaigns

Calvin Klein's simplicity is paradoxical, since its promotional campaigns have often provoked controversy with the use of teenagers in sometimes disturbing positions. But this is not the American designer's first attempt to stand out from the crowd and let his company grow. Today, Calvin Klein has a worldwide presence and, above all, a European reputation that began to take shape in the early 2000s.

Klein's greatest successes have been in perfumery, but lingerie and apparel were initially successful before representing a marginal share of the group's sales. Calvin Klein's talent has been recognized with a number of awards. At the end of the 1990s, he received the award for best men's clothing.

Like all luxury brands, Calvin Klein has not ignored perfume. As in its early days in the 70s, Calvin Klein quickly measured the success of its creations. CK One, the brand's benchmark fragrance, appeals beyond the borders of the USA and is a favorite in Europe. With 15 million bottles sold, the European market accounts for 40% of Calvin Klein's sales.

If CK One is a success, it's due to the ingenuity of its creator, who was able to harness his knowledge to deliver a fragrance unlike any other in the world. CK One is composed of lemony flavors accompanied by a refined green tea, allowing it to play both masculine and feminine roles.

Riding the wave of its CK One, Calvin Klein is now releasing a new edition, this time separating the genders. CK One Shock for Him and CK One Shock for Her have different styles and compositions.

As for Calvin Klein's fragrances for men, CK One Shock for Him marks its difference with a more aggressive fragrance: the company is going to rely on these ingredients: violet, cucumber and clementine zest with a light dash of lavender.

As far as Calvin Klein fragrances for women are concerned, Le One Shock for Her is the alter ego of the men's version. In fact, the white color (as opposed to the black of the men's version) and the pink letters of CK One Shock for Her are an immediate reminder of this gender difference. Of course, the composition of the product is also perfectly feminine. Calvin Klein offers a blend of poppy flower, blackberry and pink pepper. Logical differences that have enabled these versions to build on the success of CK One.

Calvin Klein eau de toilette and celebrities

Calvin Klein has no qualms about adapting its successes into eau de toilette or eau de parfum. The most striking example is the CK One Gold eau de toilette, the third in the CK One range. This new creation from the 1990's was favorable to its creator, who simply brought out other flavors to be universal. Jasmine, Sage and Bergamot make up this collector's fragrance by Calvin Klein. And let's not forget the many celebrities who have been ambassadors for the brand. Kate Moss and Scarlett Johnson are just two of the celebrities who have been Calvin Klein ambassadors.
